About this Item

Michael Bennett Leavitt was an American theater entrepreneur, manager, and producer. He entered show business as a blackface minstrel show singer. By the 1860s, Leavitt had made the leap to management. By 1870, Leavitt had made a name in the theater industry by importing acts to North America from Europe. Book covers the years 1859-1909 and includes boyhood recollections, Leavitt's memories of being a minstrel, his theatre friendships. Chapters include: V: First Theatres in Boston; VII: Notable Theatres During the Sixties and Seventies As I Knew Them; Leading Players; IX: When Pantomime was Popular; X: The Circus World; XVIII: Early California Theatricals; XXIII: Grand Opera in America. A total of 45 chapters. This autographed edition is to "E.D. Stair" who built and owned the Majestic Theater in New York, 1903-1922. Stair also owned the Detroit Free Press newspaper and other theatres. xii, Illustrations and photographs, Index, 735 pp. followed by 40 pages of advertisements for theatres around the country, hotels, booking agencies and vaudeville acts. CONDITION: This large volume has teal covers with orange and gilt design and title. Personal bookplate on teal and orange endpapers. Endpaper, autograph page, frontispiece photograph of Leavitt and tissue detached and laid in, detached. Some interior foxing and shading, free of notations.
