Synopsis

Hannes Böhm lives in the industrial district that the Berliners call "Feuerland" because the chimneys smoke here. He earns a little extra bread by showing curious citizens the poverty in the back houses. On such an occasion, he gets to know Alice, who lives as the daughter of the castellan in the Berlin city castle. That it is cold behind the stately facade as in the backyards of the city, Hannes soon learns, while Alice is deeply impressed by his ambition. But when the March riots erupt in 1848, there seems to be no future for the feelings Hannes and Alice develop for each other. An epochal portrait of a time in transition.
