Blind-decorated cloth, gilt cover title, 8vo, [1], 87, [1] pp, 49 hand-coloured plates. The coloured plates are signed: "J. E. S. fecit". Autograph letter (6th October, no year stated, laid in) on 24 Wetherby Gardens London SW5 letterhead from Edmund Allenby [ = 1st Viscount Allenby ] presenting the book to "Nell". Allenby (1861-1936) had a long and highly distinguished military career, rising through the ranks to Field Marshall, but is probably most widely remembered as the sometime commanding officer of T.E.Lawrence, portrayed in McLean's film Lawrence of Arabia by Jack Hawkins. Earlier ownership inscription dated October 1855 of C.A. Cane (Allenby's mother), overwritten "Mrs Allenby". One plate detached, several old specimens of ferns laid in. Spine rubbed with loss of gilt titling, covers a little marked and worn at spine ends, otherwise Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-34963
