His art is characterized by satirical, demonic, and erotic themes, often challenging societal norms and hypocrisy. Rops works hold a mirror to contemporary society, exposing its repressive standards and moral contradictions. His art oscillates between sensuality, death, and satanism, making him a key figure in the late 19th-century decadent movement ----- ABOUT THIS TITLE: This book provides a selection of Rops' graphics with notes on his life by Lee Revens, followed by an article titled Instrumentum Diaboli by J. K. Huysmans (1848 1907) the French writer and art critic. Initially associated with Naturalism, he later became a prominent figure in the decadent movement with the publication of À rebours . His novels often expressed deep pessimism, influenced by the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. Instrumentum Diaboli encapsulates the idea of something being both alluring and potentially dangerous a channel through which the devil s influence manifests. -- Lee Revens was an American cultural critic, folklorist, and author. He made significant contributions in the field of computing history and literature. ----- Happy to send pictures and answer any questions.
