Taking its name from the American TV series, this exhibition catalogue looks at the relationship between art and death. Death is a universal and ancient theme in art. The history of the image is known to be closely tied to the idea of recording the features of those who have died while, on the other hand, our perception ends at death. While violence and death are everywhere in the media, they are also avoided directly in society.
The corpse has been firmly banished from our view and replaced with a system of rituals and symbols that mediate the finiteness of human existence. This publication accompanies the exhibition Six Feet Under at Kunst museum Bern. English and German text.
