Original decorative forest-green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, rear panel stamped in blind, top edge gilt. Illustrated by Virginia Keep with four half-tones on inserted plates, title page printed in orange and black. Gift inscription (to a relative) by author on front free endpaper. A fine copy in a nearly fine dust jacket (aside from a negligible chip at head of spine) which repeats the design of the front and spine book panels. The illustrations are excellent. A scarce book in any form but rare in this condition. #3733. $600. Short science fiction novel with a hero cast in the mad scientist mold. Professor Whitmore believes he can alter the flow of time by means of drugs, fasting and sleep deprivation, and he proceeds to experiment on himself with the aid of his young black servant, Blanchard. The story is noteworthy, among other things, for its unusually well-rounded and sympathetic portrayal of Blanchard.
