Favourite Poems TO READ ALOUD Illustrated by Art Krusz Spring Books, London, 1957 First Edition (no edition stated) A delightful and charming mid-century children's poetry anthology, Favourite Poems TO READ ALOUD, published by Spring Books in London in 1957. This is a lovely example of a vintage illustrated children's book that brings together traditional nursery rhymes, nonsense verses by Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll, and classic poems by Robert Louis Stevenson, Eugene Field, Christina Rossetti, and many others. Perfect for bedtime reading or introducing young readers to the magic of poetry. Key Features & Contents 142 pages of poetry with delightful black-and-white line illustrations throughout by Art Krusz. Includes favourites such as: “Little Boy Blue” (Eugene Field) “Little Raindrops” (Ann Hawkshaw) “The Months” (Sara Coleridge) “Dame Wiggins of Lee” “The Night Before Christmas” (Clement C. Moore) And dozens more classic verses. Full contents pages and an attractive title page illustration of a storyteller reading to children. Striking colour pictorial front board showing a young girl reading by a window, with red spine and backstrip. Condition Good / Very Good for a 68-year-old children's book. Complete with all pages present and firmly bound. Clean, bright, and unmarked interior — no inscriptions, no children's scribbles, no underlining. Boards show light shelf wear and some rubbing to edges consistent with age and gentle use. Spine solid with clear titling. Minor age-toning to endpapers, as expected. Overall a very presentable copy that displays beautifully on the shelf. Special Historical Note This edition was printed in Czechoslovakia (specifically by PZ2 Bratislava) at a time when the country was part of the Eastern Bloc. Czechoslovak state printing houses were renowned across the West for their high-quality colour and illustrated work, and many British publishers like Spring Books (an imprint associated with Paul Hamlyn) outsourced production there for excellent results at competitive prices. As a native of Czechoslovakia / Slovak region, this book holds extra personal significance — a tangible piece of my native country’s rich printing and publishing heritage from the communist era, when technical skill and artistic talent continued to flourish despite the political climate. Bibliographic Details Publisher: Spring Books, London Publication Date: 1957 Illustrator: Art Krusz (Jerry Hammer Associates) Binding: Hardcover with pictorial boards ISBN: None (pre-ISBN era) Pages: 142 A wonderful collectible for lovers of vintage children’s literature, poetry anthologies, or mid-20th-century illustrated books.
