He was among the first Filipino historians renowned for promoting a distinctly nationalist point of view of Filipino history. He was named National Scientist of the Philippines in 1985 for his distinguished contributions in the field of history. Agoncillo was also among the few academics who held the rank of University Professor, an academic rank given to outstanding faculty members with specialization in more than one of the traditional academic domains at the University of the Philippines Diliman." In the second volume, Mr. Agoncillo discusses the social and economical condition of the country; the cultural aspects of the occupation; the underground movement; the controversy in Washington D.C. Over the presidential succession; the flight of the Laurel government; and the return of the liberation of forces. In assessing the Japanese adventure in the Philippines during the fateful years 1941-1945, Mr. Agoncillo explains its tragic features as basically rooted in the failure of the Japanese to understand the implications of the Philippine history and the psychology of the Filipinos."
