Add to basketAlthough Exley states this book is a fictional memoir, it bears close resemblance to the long malaise that he calls his life. The son of a local high school football star, Exley never won the notice he craved and turned to drink and obsessively following the football Giants. Insulin therapy and shock treatments at mental institutions mark his devolution. The failure to achieve the American dream calls the novel into comparison to The Great Gatsby. Nominated for the National Book Award and made into a motion picture in 1972, starring Jerry Ohrbach.
