The first English edition of this scarce work.A collection of charming fairy tales from Rugen, tales that had long been out of print before this work.The tales are described as quaint and simple, and found popularity in Victorian society.Containing seventeen stories in total, including 'The Story of the Seven Coloured Mice', 'Princess Svanvitha', 'The Burning Money', 'How the Mice are Whistling', and more.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, one map of Rugen, one plate, and three head pieces.The author of the collection, Ernst Moritz Arndt, was born on Rugen, a German island.Translated into English by the suffragette Anna Dabis.Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the half-title.Two pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Marks to the boards, including a small tide mark to the head of the front boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Front hinge is a little strained. Front endpaper has been removed. Internally, firmly bound.
