21.5 x 13.5 cm. Octavo. xvi 335pp [1]. 19th century 1/2 leather binding with embossed stamp of "The Society of Writers to the Signet". Spine has been rebacked recently, preserving most of the older spine. Spine lettering faded and difficult to read. Ex-private library with a small label and stamp on front fixed endpaper. From the library of Leonard G. Wilson, medical professor and author of several books on geologist Charles Lyell, with Wilson's bookplate. Soiling to the tops of the last few pages and rear endpapers. Pages 255-274 are heavily foxed. Rare work, no copies of this edition listed on worldcat and 1 copy of an edition done in 1819. Chapter headings include: "Introduction", "Most of the tests of an Aqueous or Igneous origin of Minerals that have been hitherto stated, unsatisfactory", "The Nature of Rocks propsoed as a test of their origin", "Nature of Crystalline Aggregation", Igneous origin of Granite; proofs of it from colour, form the appearances of veins, &c.", Basalt and Trap Rocks", "Transition and Secondary Rocks", "General Ideas of the Formation of the Exterior parts of the Earth, on the preceding views", "Destroying and Renovating Powers", "Connection of Geology with the Scriptures".
