About this Item
Erlenbach-Zurich: Rotapfel-Verlag, 1943. (12.25 x 9 in, 31.4 x 23 cm). 112 pp. First edition. Fine in very good dust jacket. 95 black and white gravure plates. Introduction by Arnold Burgaurer. Original beige cloth covered boards, front cover lettered in red (spine a bit slanted, else fine); original printed and photographically illustrated dust jacket (light wear to extremities, 3.2 cm closed tear at head of upper panel near fore-edge, .5 cm tear and associated creasing at top edge nearing spine, .5 cm closed tear at crown, complete and quite nice); original sheet of plate captions laid in (edges age toned to a degree). "As Arnold Burgaurer cogently states in his introduction, Tuggener is a jack-of-all-trades: he exhibits, 'the sharp eye of the hunter, the dreamy eye of the painter; he can be a realist, a formalist, romantic, theatrical, surreal.' Tuggener moves effortlessly between large-format lucidity and grainy, blurred impressionism, in a book that is a decade ahead of its time." (Parr/Badger, "The Photobook" Volume I, p. 144). Additional references: (Roth, ed., "The Open Book", p. 134-135; Auer, "802 photo books", p. 300) A fine copy in a very good, complete and unrestored example of the dust jacket.
