Item description from seller

This excellent text book was part of the New Math reform wave of the '60s which, under names like finite math (Kemeny) and discrete systems (Steiglitz) among many others, tried to push the student from away rote learning and a structured curriculum into the direction of independent mathematical thinking. Thus the part headings, which are as much of the period as Op Art or the Beatles: Finite Mathematics (Statements; Sets; Counting - Permutations and Combinations; Probability; Relations and Functions; Inequalities and Introduction to Linear Programming; and Linear Equations, Matrices, and Determinants); Precalculus (Some Nonlinear Relations: Quadratic, Exponential, and Logarithmic Graphs; Sequences, Limits, and Summation); Calculus (Limits of Functions of One Variable, Derivatives; Maxima and Minima: Theory and Application; The Definite Integral; Integral Functions); Linear Algebra (Matrices, Vector Spaces, Linear Dependence, and Bases; Rank and the General Solution to Linear Equations); and Applied Mathematics (Simplex Method of Linear Programming: Theory; Simplex Method of Linear Programming: Application; Statistical-Decision Theory: Introduction; and Statistical-Decision Theory 2: Convex Sets and Bayes Decision Rules). Not bad for a two-semester course. Five parts, 19 chapters, with tables, figures, Appendix, Answers to Problems; Index of Applied Terms, and Index of Mathematical Terms; plus Preface and Contents. Covers slightly creased and puckered at backstrap, otherwise clean and sound; name of prior owner inked of lfEP; text is clean and strong.
