Growing out of the painting of Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin, it contributed in a spectacular fashion by restoring to painting a purity and brilliance of color European art had not possessed since the Middle Ages. This book analyzes the origins of Fauvism, illustrates the movement at its peak, and describes the personalities of the different artists identified with it~among them Vlaminck, Derain, Matisse, Van Dongen~showing what principles united them, and what idiosyncrasies separated them. Biographies are also given of lesser known Fauvist painters, such as Camoin, Manguin, and Friesz. Fauvism received its name in 1905 when the critic Louis Vauxcelles responded to a group exhibition by labeling the participants " wild beasts " (jauves). Like the Impressionists, whose name was also the pejorative appellation of an infuriated critic, the Fauves gladly accepted the label, painting works that stand as landmarks in twentieth century art. But Fauvism was never as cohesive as Impressionism or certain other movements, and by 1908 it had ceased to exist, as its representative artists pursued their own ways. The author does not limit his study, however, to the brief period when it flourished. He traces its influence through the entire careers of Matisse and Dufy. And, equally important for the history of twentieth~century painting, he shows the impact of the exhilarating colors and simple plasticity of Fauvist works on the early German Expressionists who formed Die Briicke and Der Blaue Reiter schools.
