Synopsis

Franz Josef Wetz starts from the observation that people show excessive behaviour even in modern societies. Although such behaviors are socially ostracized, they are encountered with educational measures and threats of punishment, the "Dionysian energies" can only be contained to a limited extent. So the question arises whether it is not useful to allow people a socially responsible way back "to the jungle of their otherwise tamed desires" and cultivate this (festival, sex, music, sports, etc.). The book is divided into three parts: first, the author addresses excessive behavior that harms other people and seeks explanations ("orgies of violence"). He then describes how (and with what success) this is encountered in the age of civilization ("uprising against decency"). Finally, Wetz discusses whether there are socially acceptable forms of living out passions and how the joy of sensual intoxication can be integrated into a concept of maturity ("Happy Wilderness"). Because a society needs reservations for lustful excesses.
