The very scarce first edition of prominent Chiot historian Philip Argenti's account of Colonel Fabvier's attempt to liberate the Greek island of Chios. A very scarce first edition, in the publisher's original full cloth binding.Illustrated with a frontispiece, two plates, and a double page map. Collated, complete. The work of Greek diplomat, lawyer, genealogist and historian Philip Pandely Argenti, who hailed from a long established noble family from the Greek island of Chios. His family can be traced back to 1511 on the island. In 1962, he donated over 10,000 volumes of rare books and manuscripts, maps, and albums to the Library of Chios.Described in contemporary diplomatic reports', Argenti details Colonel Fabvier's 1827 expedition to Chios, which was a significant event during the Greek War of Independence. Fabvier, a French officer supporting the Greek cause, led a force of about 600 soldiers and volunteers to liberate Chios from Ottoman control. The expedition was ultimately unsuccessful, and in early 1828, the Ottoman's drove away the Greek ships. With the bookplate of the Oxford University Printer's Library to the front pastedown, and no further library markings. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Bump to back strip head, with small horizontal closed tear to cloth at back strip head. A touch of shelf wear to back strip tail. Otherwise, externally excellent. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good Indeed.
