Item description from seller

First edition in English (and the first translation in any language) of Queneau’s "untranslatable" Oulipo masterpiece. The work comprises ninety-nine retellings of an anecdote in which a man gets on the "S" bus, encounters a brawl, and then later witnesses one of the brawlers receiving some fashion advice. The original text is a remarkable work of literary ingenuity, utilizing unique subtleties of the French language, irreplaceable as such in another language. Wright’s translation, as a result, is its own literary accomplishment, finding masterly forms with which to adapt the play of the original work. A landmark volume in both Oulipo literature and in translation theory. Scarce. Yellow cloth, spine lettered in red, pictorial dustjacket. 198, [2] pp. 7 x 4 3/4 in. Title in red and black, illustrated throughout. Very good; rear hinge exposed but intact, a bit rubbed, dustjacket spine a bit sunned and with tiny nicks at head and tail.
