Binding is tight and square. 126 pages : music ; 27 cm. . . . . . A foundational pedagogical text designed to guide young music students through the principles and practice of melodic composition, particularly as a complement to the study of harmony. The book offers a systematic series of exercises structured to build habits essential for composing effective melodies, emphasizing both the theoretical and practical aspects of melodic writing. The book begins with basic concepts, instructing students on constructing melodies using the major scale in both regular, stepwise (diatonic) and exceptional movements. Goetschius provides detailed chapters on the use of essential tones, scale lines, chord lines, and the principles of rhythm and phrase construction. The text is supplemented with copious musical examples, practical drills, and guidance for inventing original melodies. Students are encouraged to persistently practice until the habits of good melodic writing are ingrained, with exercises designed to cover at least a full year of study.? This book was widely adopted as a standard teaching tool in early 20th-century American music education and remains valued for its clear, methodical approach to melody creation. It is frequently referenced alongside Goetschius's other influential treatises, and its structured progression makes it ideal for both classroom use and individual study by aspiring composers.…

Antique Mall Books has been in dealer in used, out-of-print and hard-to-find books for over 23 years. We have sold over 200,000 books over the years, both on-line and in our bookstore, including a fair amount to Great Britain and many other locations worldwide. You can count on professional results from us as far as customer service goes. Our quantity of books may not be as large as most dealers but what we have in inventory are quality books accurately described (all with pictures) and professionally packaged and shipped.
