Keats's romantic narrative poem plays on the folk belief that a girl could see her future husband in a dream if she performed certain rites on the eve of St. Agnes. Founded by the stationer A. C. Curtis, the Astolat Press published attractive editions of poetry and fantasy around the turn of the century. Publications included episodes from Malory's Morte d'Arthur, the Rubaiyat, Chaucer's Prioress's Tale, and sonnets by William Shakespeare and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The press took its name from the castle which, in Arthurian legend, is home to Elaine ("the lady of Shallott") and which Malory identifies as Guildford Castle. Octavo. Text printed in red and black. Original red roan over limp boards, front cover lettered and richly decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A few marks and spots of rubbing to leather, light foxing to outer leaves, a near-fine copy.
