Item description from seller

Hardcover 1st Edition published by Nijhoff in the Netherlands (concurrently published in the U.S. by Kluwer). 940 pp. + xxix. The text is bound in dark blue cloth covered boards and well contrasted by gold lettering on the covers and spine. The book is in Good+ condition without a dust jacket. There is some light staining to the boards most likely from exposure to water/humidity; otherwise, the book is in Very Good condition. The corners show light wear/rubbing to the cloth, and the spine ends are lightly indented. That said, the covers are in great structural shape. The binding is square and tight. There are two small abrasions to the front flyleaf. The interior pages are clean and bright. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment for protection from the elements. USPS electronic tracking number issued free of charge. Forty years ago the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms came into force. It was born of the shared conviction that breaches of the most elementary human rights, such as had been experienced in the 1930s and '40s, should never be allowed to occur again. The Convention and the control bodies responsible for ensuring the observance of the engagements undertaken by the contracting States have had a profound influence on democratic European society in the latter half of this century, and have had repercussions outside Europe too; indeed the European system of human rights protection has served as a model or basic reference text for other regional systems. The European System for the Protection of Human Rights is a unique collection of essays by some of the most outstanding scholars and practitioners in the field of European Human Rights. Its aim is not only to sum up forty years of European experience in the collective endeavour to protect human rights, but above all to stimulate critical thinking about that experience and to review whether the Convention sytem as it stands is still fitted to meet the needs of European society in the coming millenium.

Store description

Alien Bindings is an online bookshop located in Baltimore that has been in operation for nearly 20 years. Alien Bindings caters to the sciences including the physical sciences, astronomy, mathematics, computer science, the social sciences and medicine. I also dabble in a wide array of other categories including antiquarian books and history. I run a clean, green business. I try to reuse clean materials for packaging whenever possible. For example, books are carefully packaged frequently using clean cardboard for custom made boxes, recycled paper is used for printed labels and recycled plastic or bubble wrap is used for a weather-proof barrier. I drop the packages off to my local post office via foot or cycle in order to further reduce the carbon footprint.
