Ex-library with blindstamp on titles of both volumes, bookplates, faded numbering on the spine of volume two, slight mark on the spine of volume one, but this is still a very nice, o/w near fine set. August Weismann [1834-1914] German biologist who taught zoology at the University of Freiburg from 1886 to 1912. Weismann was the originator of the germ plasm theory of heredity. His doctrine stressed the unbroken continuity of the germ plasm and the non-inheritability of acquired characteristics. His belief that acquired characters are not transmitted was a direct rejection of the Lamarckian theory and caused much controversy. It was an important development as it meant that moral qualities cannot be transmitted to children, but have to be acquired, in each case by intensive early training. The above work is "a valuable compilation of Weismann's contributions to genetics.".
