This is a rare first edition of Gilbert Burnetâ s moving funeral sermon and memorial tribute to Queen Mary II of England (1662â "1694), consort of King William III. Delivered shortly after her death, Burnetâ s work praises her piety, fortitude, and leadership during Englandâ s turbulent late 17th century. It provides contemporary insight into the political and religious climate following the Glorious Revolution, the Nine Yearsâ War, and Maryâ s role as a Protestant heroine. The book is prefaced with an engraved portrait of Queen Mary II, finely executed, showing her in regal dress with crown and scepter. Burnet, one of the most prominent churchmen of his time, was Bishop of Salisbury and a close associate of the royal court, making this an important contemporary memorial document. . Very good. Pages generally clean and crisp, with only mild toning and occasional foxing. Some faint spotting to margins. Engraved portrait sharp and well-preserved. Contemporary full speckled calf, panel design to covers, gilt-decorated spine with raised bands, red morocco label titled ESSAY ON Q. M.Very well-preserved for its age. Seller Inventory # 605
