Locke describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience. The essay was one of the principal sources of empiricism in modern philosophy. The enduring importance of Locke's work is shown by the publication in Boston of this first American edition.** On the end paper of Volume 2 is the inscription, "Salmon Wheaton, Y. College." Salmon Wheaton was born in Litchfield CT, educated at Yale, and ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1808.** Volume 3 bears the name "Samuel L. Pearson (sic)."** First American Edition, from the Twentieth London edition, as per the title page.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight.
