Item description from seller

A good copy of the scarce 1st edition in original cloth binding with black and white frontispiece and 8 further black and white plates by 'native Eskimo artists'. Knud Rasmussen is famous as an explorer of the Arctic, who grew up in Greenland and spent his life understanding and studying native life. The green cloth binding has gilt titles to spine and blind stamped titles to the front board. It has some light scuffing and edge wear; some pulling to spine ends; and corner wear including bumping to the top corners. Internally there is the bookplate of Cardiff Public Reference Library to the front pastedown endpaper. The bookplate and a small set of library numbers written on the verso of the title are the only library markings. Contents: half title; frontispiece; title; introduction pp 5-10; contents list; plate list; text pp 15-156 with 8 plates; list of sources 1p; publisher's list 2pp. There is some browning to free endpapers and spotting to half title and title, and usually to pages next to the plates. Away from the plates the text is clean and without spotting.…

Store description

We are a small online bookselling business specialising in rare and unusual books, generally published before 1900, with a focus on natural history, history, illustrated works and some literature. We are based in the beautiful Orkney Islands and have a specialist Orkney/Shetland section in our listings. We run a bookshop in Orkney - Birsay Books - where we have a wide range of stock from science fiction and fantasy to maritime and, of course, Orkney/Shetland and Scottish material. We take images of all of our books to supplement the online descriptions, and are always happy to provide more on request. When you order from us, we ensure that books are properly packed to protect their condition and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for additional security. Because we are based on an island which depends on ferries and flights for shipping, we can not guarantee 'next day' delivery. We will simply get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can.…
