Item description from seller

First American edition. 24mo. 271pp., illustrated with a wood engraved title vignette. In the original mottled calf, black leather spine label. Small contemporary owner name (partly erased) at top margin of title page. Edgeworn and lightly scuffed, lacking back free endpaper, good or better. Narrated by an aristocrat, Edgeworth’s *Ennui* is a sly fable set during Ireland’s revolution of 1798. Admired by Lord Byron, critic Marilyn Butler remarks that *Ennui* is "perhaps the boldest, most innovative, and most influential contribution to English language fiction by a woman writer before Charlotte Bronte and George Eliot". Scarce. *OCLC* locates only 8 copies; with none at auction in the last forty years.
