Item description from seller

[1st ed., 1st printing] ; 2 volumes in 3 : facsimiles ; 25-43 cm ; ISBN 9780114401085, 9780114400392, 011440108X, 0114400393 OCLC 3630259 ; LCCN 77372275 LC CD109 .C48 ; Dewey 327.41 ; textured blue and white illustrated flexible stiff covers ; Contents: pt. 1. Documents and interpretation.--pt. 2. Plates ; Chaplais's work is not primarily concerned with the details of specific diplomatic incidents, but rather with the procedures and practices that governed those incidents. The book delves into the language, dating styles, and other aspects of the diplomatic documents themselves, including letters and treaties. The book examines the use of Latin and French in diplomatic communication, highlighting the changing fortunes of these languages. Chaplais discusses the intricacies of dating styles and the importance of both written records and memory in diplomatic affairs. The book may be challenging for those without a strong understanding of Latin and French, as many texts are presented in their original languages without translation. ; Bookplate of George Peddy Guttino, who taught at Emory for 32 years and was a distinguished and beloved professor and author. He was a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and he chaired the Emory history department in the early 1970's. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War I and worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence Service at the Pentagon during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's degree at Swarthmore College and a Master's degree at the University of Iowa.
