Item description from seller

The three volume first edition of English antiquary Joseph Ritson's anthology of English poetry. A three volume first edition anthology of English poetry, edited by the English antiquary Joseph Ritson, a staunch supporter of the French Revolution best known for his 1795 compilation of tales of the Robin Hood legend. The publisher advertises these works as 'a selection of English poetry, in a chronological series, from the beginning of the sixteenth century [.] to the present time, upon a plan hitherto unattempted, at least in this country'. Featured within these volumes are examples of the poetry of such talents as Chaucer, Shakespeare and Dryden, alongside samples from unnamed authors. These works are beautifully bound, with the first volume in full straight grained morocco, and volumes II and III in full calf. Volume I was published in 1793, and volumes II and III in 1794.From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. With the armorial bookplate of 'Foley' to the front pastedown of volume I, and 'FJ' to volumes II and III. ESTC reference no. T138308 With the first volume bound in full straight grained morocco, and volumes II and III in full calf. Rubbing to back strips of each volume, most prominent to volumes II and III. Rubbing to front and rear joint of each volume, with head of front joint to volume II starting, and board holding firm. Armorial bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good.
