Mounteney-Jephson was an officer selected by Stanley to assist in the relief expedition for Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer). He was included in the expedition thanks to a 1,000 pound donation from his cousin the Countess de Noailles, to whom this book is dedicated. Stanley and his men sailed up the Congo, and then marched through the Ituri forest, as the other routes to the province of Equatoria were blocked. Stanley lost 180 men in the forest to disease and injury, and the expedition is regarded as one of the most grueling in history. They did eventually rendez-vous with Emin Pasha, but Pasha was only too happy to continue occupying the settlement that he created, so he was reluctant to leave. Eventually, however, his soldiers rose up and revolted against him, and he became a prisoner in territory previously controlled by him. In the end, 1,510 people left the region and Stanley and his men and Emin Pasha and his followers formed a large caravan that would make its way to Suez, after mapping Lake Albert Edward Nyanza (a lake that blocked their path because its existence was not known to them). A bright and attractive copy of a thrilling and complicated tale of equatorial travel.
