Synopsis

This collection opens with a section of lyric poems; features a narrative sequence based on the trials of Guthlac, the hermit saint of Crowland in Lincolnshire; and ends with a section of "Brickyard Poems" celebrating the flora, fauna and human activity surrounding immediate environs of the poet's home near Huntingdon. The volume includes poems about rats, herons, magpies and a peahen called Cleopatra. The author won first prize in the 1991 Open University Poets Open Poetry Competition and second prize in the 1992 Peterloo Open Poetry Competition judged by Debjani Chatterjee, Dana Gioia and Michael Longley. The poet's first volume, "The Impossible Jigsaw", is also available form Peterloo Poets.
