Item description from seller

First edition, 8vo, [12], 55, [1]pp., 3 engraved folding plates, plates a little stained and dust soiled, endpapers renewed, recent calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Here the Rev. Samuel Vince (1749-1821) gives a brief geometric primer on parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas, written to equip students with the classical methods needed to follow Newton's Principia. Avoiding algebra, Vince uses Euclidean constructions to explain the properties—tangents, axes, proportional relations—that Newton's proofs rely on. Its clarity and compactness made it a standard preparatory text in the late-18th-century Cambridge curriculum.
