Synopsis:

Hopper made the unique visual landscape of the American city all his own. All-night diners, filling stations, motel rooms and deserted offices are populated by isolated, brooding figures. This work on the quintessentially American artist accompanies a retrospective at Tate Modern, Summer 2004.

Synopsis: Published to accompany a major retrospective exhibition, this book analyses Hopper's work in the context of both American and European painting from the turn of the 20th century up until the 1960s. It also takes into account the influence of film and other popular cultural references.
