Both book and dustjacket are in pristine condition. The definitive portrait of the iconic American realist painter, the book continues to draw powerful reactions for its raw, unvarnished look behind Hopper's melancholic canvases. The book functions just as much as a biography of Jo, highlighting how she acted as an essential eyewitness to his creative process, frequently saving him from severe painter's block despite enduring regular emotional and physical mistreatment. As the primary cataloger of Hopper's catalogue raisonné, the author's ability to tie specific diary entries and domestic arguments directly to the dates, locations, and somber moods of his most famous paintings (like Nighthawks or Early Sunday Morning) remains unmatched. This updated and expanded edition doubles the total number of illustrations and introduces a dedicated gallery of his paintings in full color. Very heavy book - nearly 800 pages.
