A rudimentary treatise on how to properly stoke and maintain industrial furnaces, the power source to provide steam for machinery in the 19th century. Basically, the author explains the various factors involved in the economical operation of furnaces; getting the most out of a given amount of coal. The appendix also discusses the best designs of "grates" or fireplaces for dwelling homes and their proper ventilation, and the topic of ventilating coal mines.
