A scathing, near prescient, critique of the Treaty of Versailles by the venerable British economist and philosopher, wherein, the author warned that the punitive reparations demanded by the Allied powers would ultimately cripple Germany and sow the seeds of future conflict. A popular success, it shaped public and political discourse, reinforcing the widespread belief that the treaty imposed a "Carthaginian peace" designed to crush the Central Powers, particularly Germany, and would coalesce American opinion against the treaty and the League of Nations; While in Britain, the perception of Germany s unfair treatment would fuel support for the later appeasement policies of the British government towards Adolf Hitler, and Nazi Germany. The book would cement Keynes reputation as a leading economic thinker.
