23 cm, pp. [1-2] 3-12, self wrappers, stapled. First edition. A history of Yosemite Valley through 1855 with emphasis on the Mariposa Indian campaigns which led to the effective discovery of Yosemite by European man. Includes Captain John Boling's official account of the second expedition to Yosemite in 1851. The Captain's report was written in the form of two letters, the first written in Yosemite Valley on May 15, 1851, addressed to Major James Savage, and the second composed at his camp on the Fresno River on May 29, addressed to Colonel G. W. Barbour. These letters were first published in the San Francisco Alta California on June 12 and 14, 1851. Small chip from front fore-edge, some wear and creasing along fore-edges, faint vertical mailing fold, a good copy. (#166743).
