Item description from seller

First editions. Slim octavos. 11-29 pages each. Stapled wrappers. Each with the owner name and stamp of a noted American psychologist on the front cover else about fine with a tiny bit of tanning and soil. Only Clarke's pamphlet is dated, but the others are almost certainly contemporary; if dates were given in *OCLC*, they support that. Six very uncommon pamphlets published by Walter V. Clarke Associates, founded in 1948 and still around today. Clarke noticed that new hires with similar background often produced different results, and sought to create metrics to determine an employees best fit. Essentially an integration of social or behavioral psychology with business practices, the five "Vectors" are: Assertiveness, Sociability, Calmness, Conformability, and Conscious restraint. The pamphlets, one by Clarke and five papers given at annual conferences, are: 1. BLUMER, Cecil C. *Salary Structures and Policies*. 13pp. Paper presented by Blumer, who was the Director of Industrial Engineering for the National Metal Trades Association, to the Conference of AVA Analysts, October 10, 1953. No separate copies in *OCLC*. 2. CLARKE, Walter V. *One Man's Opinion: A Manual for the Oral Interview*. 11pp. No separate copies in *OCLC*. 3. HAYAKAWA, Dr. S. I. *The Semantic Barrier: A Theory of Personality and Communication*. 18pp. Talk presented at the 1954 Confrerence of AVA Analysts. Dr. Hayakawa, who was later a university professor and U.S. Senator, is described as "One of the leaders in the science of Semantics at the present time." Four copies in *OCLC*. 4. HILL, Prof. E. Arthur. *The Proof of the Pudding*. 23pp. Talk presented at the 1952 Conference of AVA Analysts. Hill was a mathematics professor with "a long background of teaching statistics." No separate copies in *OCLC*. 5. MALONEY, Dr. Martin. *Are They Listening? An Introduction to the Fundamentals of Semantics*. 14pp. Talk presented at the 1953 Conference of AVA Analysts. No separate copies in *OCLC*. 6. WARNER, Lucien. * Innocent Traitors*. 29pp. Talk given in September, 1953 "to a group of industrial and business executives attending the Conference of Activity Vector Analysts. (.) This group of executives was assembled for one common purpose-the better understanding of human behavior." Warner was a professor of psychology at Claremount Men's College. Just over a dozen copies in *OCLC*. Six early and very uncommon papers seeking to integrate psychology into business practice.…
