J. Wilkie and W. Charnley, London and Newcastle, 1776. Half recent Calf. Good. First Edition. 8vo. [2], 382pp, [4 Itinerary, Order of the Plates and Errata]. Recent half calf, spine in six panels, red morocco title label to second panel, bands bordered by gilt double rule. Good binding with a bit of rubbing, early 20th century binding. Internally generally very clean but with the odd page of brown or clack marks, worming to a few pages (267/8; 319 329 and 383). 19 plates (18 folding) as called for. Some plates faded, one repaired. Hutchinson (1732-1801), a lawyer from Barnard Castle, also wrote county histories of Cumberland and Durham. This is an expanded version of his "Excursion to the Lakes" of 1774, including excursions to other parts of Cumberland, and to Hexham and parts of Durham and Yorkshire. The tours were made with William's brother Richard, who drew the illustrations. The text "includes a generous amount of rich picturesque description, and lively accounts of unusual incidents" - Bicknell.
