Presumed American first edition (no direct edition/printing statement provided). 312 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14.5cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Brown cloth lightly soiled; sheen to spine so likely past owner applied a clear shellac as a subtle and very unobtrusive enhancement; spine ends bumped. Toning, light soiling, and a few spots of surface abrasion to text block edges. Ink ownership inscription at top of front pastedown; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. With Preface, Introduction, Epilogue, Appendix, and Index. Features ten chapters titled as: "Monastic Duties and Activities;" "Lay Interference in Monastic Affairs;" "Ecclesiastical Interference in Monastic Affairs;" "Precedents for Suppression 1308-1534;" "The Royal Visitation of the Monasteries 1535;" "Suppression of the Smaller Monasteries and the Pilgrimage of Grace 1536-1537;" "From the Pilgrimage of Grace to the Final Suppression 1537-1540;" "Nuns;" "The Friars;" and "The Fate of the Dispossessed Religious." The book was first issued by British publisher Jonathan Cape in February 1937 within their Bedford Historical Series.
