In posing this question and others, The Elusive Messiah opens a window for a new look at the age old problem of faith versus reason. To fully understand the implications of the historical search, Raymond Martin suggests we must first examine the inquiries of the individual scholars. In the book's first part. he provides an insightful overview of the major players who have written on the subject. among them E. P. Sanders, John Meier, Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza, J. D. Crossan, Marcus Borg, and N. T. Wright. In critiquing their views, Martin explores the role of what he takes to be an anti~theology theology in secular historical methods. In the second part, Martin discusses various Christian responses to the challenges presented by the historians' work, including the response proposed by Luke Timothy Johnson. Martin goes on to argue philosophically that unless one adopts a radical, multi~perspectival view of the historical Jesus, faith and reason not only may, but must coexist alongside each other. Finally, Martin assesses the impact on the future of Christianity of the challenge posed by historical Jesus studies to traditional Christian belief. Through readily understandable language and examples, Martin poses basic questions, looks for the answers, and explains how these answers correspond to larger issues. His accessible writing synthesizes complex academic arguments in ways that bring them down to earth, enabling Christians and other readers to understand what is being claimed and to test these claims for meaningfulness. …
