About this Item
Excerpt from the Hong Kong-based journal, Far East Economic Review, reviewing Richard Coughlin's then-recent publication 'Double Identity: The Chinese in Modern Thailand' addressing the issues around Thai citizens of Chinese descent in the early 1960's. During this turbulent period, the spread of Chinese Communist politics into SE Asian communities was viewed as a potentially mortal threat, and Chinese immigrants were the naturally suspected conduits. During this period it was estimated that there were 2 million Chinese speakers in Thailand (approaching 10 percent of the total population at the time), and that 85 percent of the country's retail trade was under the control of this group. The author/reviewer discusses the position that Chinese Thais found themselves in due to the forces around them and provides his views of the most likely future outcome. FEER issue of June 1, 1961, 15 pp. (article covers 7½ pages of the excerpt). Together with a related, partial page clipping entitled 'Chinese in Siam' by 'a correspondent in Bangkok', excerpted from The Economist, June 30, 1962. Both unbound and protected in clear plastic folder. Size: 27 x 20 cm. Seller Inventory # 001990
