A UK 1st edition hardback copy of the author's 1848 novel. Bound from the parts of the series. - The book is in fair condition overall. The page block is significantly sunned, but is still attached to the spine, although there are gaps between the pastedowns and end papers. Rubbing to the spine with some grazes to the top and bottom. Rubbing to the boards with areas of loss to the edges, corners and faces. Internally, the book does not have its half-title page but is otherwise complete with all other pages and plates present. The pages and plates are generally sunned, foxed and a little marked in places. There is a previous owner's name and address printed neatly to the top right of the title page. - I have checked the contents against the first edition requirements in Smith- "Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth" with results as follows: BINDING: This is not the 'original cloth' binding, but instead has green leather spine with gilt title and author surname. Marble-effect front and reverse boards with green leather to outside corners. Marble effect pastedowns and end papers. The copy has a bookbinder's sticker for M Burgess, Macclesfield, to the bottom of the front pastedown. - CONTENTS- All pages are present except for the half-title page. All plates are present. The frontispiece and vignette title page are protected by a tissue guard. The vignette title page is the correct first edition one with Captain Cuttle's hook on his left arm. Includes the six entry, eight-line errata after page (xvi), but not the 2-line errata or the errata slip. - PLATES- All plates are the correct 1st edition plates according to Smith. - TEXT- The majority of the first edition text points are met, with the exception of the following which are NOT MET: * Page 70- No 'f' missing in 'familiar'. *Page 287- No spacing in "w ith". *Page 253- No missing dot over the 'i' in 'remains'. *Page 324- Spelling has been corrected to read 'Captain' rather than 'Capatin'. All other Smith text points are met. - A fair copy overall, with the majority of the Smith first edition points present.…
