Boards and spine have light rubbing to edges and crushing at spine ends. Upper page block edge is a little darkened. Page block contents are clean clear and bright with good firm binding. This book is considered the pre-eminent style guide to British English usage, pronunciation and writing. Colloquially referred to as Fowler's Usage it became the standard for other style guides to writing in English. Immensely influential, this first edition remains in print to this day. "No book had more influence on twentieth-century writers of English than Henry Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage. It rapidly became the standard work of reference for the correct use of English in terms of choice of words, grammar, and style. Much loved for his firm opinions, passion, and dry humour, Fowler has stood the test of time and is still considered by many to be the best arbiter of good practice." - Foreword to the World Classic Edition. After almost a century Fowler's monumental Modern English Usage remains the standard work in the genre. "With no trace of pedantry, with a constant sense that language is a living growth, and with inimitable wit and humour, Fowler compiled this complete guide to good sense and good taste in the choice of words. It was an entirely new kind of 'dictionary,' concerned as it is with the meaning of the words, the analysis of idioms, only as a part of the discipline of their proper use. For the best part of a century, H.W. Fowler has been the supreme lawgiver for English usage." - Printing and the Mind of Man. "Fowler's major work, planned with his brother, was A Dictionary of Modern English Usage(1926). It is an alphabetical listing of points of grammar, syntax, style, pronunciation, and punctuation. The depth, style, and humour of the work have made it a classic of English philology." - Encyclopedia Britannica.".
