First edition, first impression, of this innovative work of lexicography, being the first Hausa dictionary to mark tone and vowel length for every entry and to provide extensive discussion of grammatical markers. Roy Clive Abraham (1890-1963), "a key figure in African language scholarship during the twentieth century" (ODNB), collaborated with the Hausa-speaking Malam Mai Kano, a member of the Kano Native Administration. This is is the only edition to acknowledge Kano's contribution. Octavo. Original orange cloth, spine and front board lettered in black. Contemporary blue ink ownership signature to first blank, binder's ticket to front pastedown. Spine worn, boards rubbed, webbing exposed at inner joints but still sound, creasing to lower tip of first few leaves, contents clean. An acceptable copy. Seller Inventory # 153914
