First American Edition. Two volumes, complete. John Weik, 1857; no later printings indicated. Full calf, with black leather labels. Front hinge of volume 2 is cracked, front board is detached loose. Hinges on volume 1 loosening but otherwise intact. Boards are worn at edges. Closed tears to Vol. 2 end pages, else both volumes' page blocks remain sturdy and fully intact; moderate amount of foxing throughout both volumes, though more extensive in volume 1. Grieb was a Christian Socialist who inspired the utopian thinker Charles Fourier. In Paris of the '30s - in the crucible of new, even utopian ideas; between thousands of political refugees - was enthusiastic about the ideas of early Grieb socialist Charles Fourier. While in London, Grieb developed a new German-English dictionary, because he knew that English would be the language of the future.
