After the defeat of the Royalists, he was arrested and charged with high treason. He was hung, drawn and quartered in 1658.Despite his controversial political views and actions, Slingsby was also known for his contributions to science and technology. He was a member of the Royal Society and made several important advances in the fields of chemistry and metallurgy, including the development of a new method for making gunpowder. This work, compiled by Daniel Parsons, combines Slingsby's own diary - here first published from the original manuscript - alongside a reprint of his trial, a tract he wrote shortly before his death while in the Tower of London, extracts from his family papers, and a genealogical memoir. With the inscription of A. Thompson to a front blank. An exceptionally bright copy of this very scarce work, bound with brass edges. In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip and brass edges to boards. Minor rubbing to joints, with a small area of rubbing towards the tail of the front board. Inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
