Item description from seller

First edition of Dr John Johnston's account of his visit to America to meet Walt Whitman, including 11 half-tone photographs and a facsimile letter by Whitman. Johnston initially printed his notes in a pamphlet for private circulation among friends. Upon receiving a copy, Whitman expressed his approval of Johnston's writing. Johnston (1852-1927) was a Scottish physician and photographer who co-founded the Whitman appreciation group "Bolton College", also known as the "Eagle Street College", with the architect James W. Wallace. The two men separately visited the poet and later published a joint memoir of their encounters in Visits to Walt Whitman in 1890-1891 by Two Lancashire Friends (1917). Octavo. Half-tone portrait frontispiece of Whitman after photograph by Frederick Gutekunst, full-page half-tones after photographs in text, all with tissue guards. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges untrimmed. Ownership inscription of one Douglas Frost pencilled on first blank. Small wear to spine ends and one corner, light rubbing to cloth, abrasion and thinning of paper at dedication page from removed label. A very good copy.…
