A preface to front by the author dated April 23, 1897. Dodgson Hamilton Madden (1840 - 1928) was an Irish Unionist Party Member of Parliament and subsequently a Judge. Madden wrote books on legal topics as well as The Diary of Master William Silence: A Study of Shakespeare and of Elizabethan Sport. His scholarship led Maurice Healy to describe him as "a don who had strayed into the Courts". With a letter tipped-in to rear offering the book to the library of Lord Leigh from Field. In a vellum binding. Externally, generally smart with just slight wear to extremities and odd marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound.
