Synopsis of The Devil’s Alternative In 1982, a chain of failures at a Soviet fungicide plant poisons the USSR’s wheat crop, creating a looming famine that threatens national collapse. Hardliners in the Politburo push for a desperate solution: invade Western Europe and seize food by force, insisting the West will not risk nuclear retaliation. Chairman Maxim Rudin, secretly dying of cancer, knows this plan will ignite World War III, but he is running out of time to stop them. Meanwhile, Ukrainian nationalists — including Miroslav Kaminsky, Lev Mishkin, and David Lazareff — attempt to strike at the Soviet regime through assassination and hijacking, escalating tensions and undermining Rudin’s fragile control. Their actions intersect with Western intelligence when British agent Adam Munro receives inside information from his former lover Valentina, who works in the Kremlin and reveals the Politburo’s war plans. As the Soviets negotiate with the U.S. for emergency grain, a hijacked supertanker and nationalist uprisings create a second crisis: any concession to one threat worsens the other. World leaders face an impossible dilemma — avert famine, prevent war, and contain terrorism — with every option leading to catastrophic consequences. This convergence of crises embodies the novel’s title: there is no good choice, only the devil’s alternative. Forsyth’s trademark procedural detail, geopolitical realism, and multi‑layered plotting drive the story from Politburo intrigue to commando operations, creating a tense, meticulously researched thriller about brinkmanship, nationalism, and the fragility of global stability. …
