No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Clean, square, and tight. Originally published in 1907, this new edition adds some 650 notes by John H. White, Jr. as well as a new concluding chapter: "The Final Years of the Steam Locomotive in America" also by White. This is the First MIT Press edition, with all the original illustrations, including over 200 historic locomotives, plus additional photos and drawings. Among the additions are photos of locomotives from the 1940s and a fold-out diagram from the 1920s of a Baldwin Passenger Locomotive (4-8-2, Mountain type) with key to the locations of 385 separate components.
