A handsome, well-preserved example of the 1871 1st American edition, 1st issue (Freeman, pg. 130, with a list of 16 errata for Vol. I on the verso of the title leaf of Vol. II). Complete in 2 vols. A bright and fresh set, with minimal wear (very light scuffing at the panels of Vol. I) and texts clean throughout. Uniform octavos, brick red cloth, bright gilt-titling to the spines, arabesque flourishes at the corners. The book in which Darwin at last explicitly ascribes the principle of evoluton to mankind's shadowy past.
